Wisconsin Rut Dates 2026: When the Rut Starts
Ask around in Wisconsin and November means one thing: the nine-day. For bowhunters, though, almost all of our estimated rut window comes before the gun opener.
Here's where our forecast puts the 2026 Wisconsin rut, what tends to change in each phase, and how to pick your sits.
When is the rut in Wisconsin in 2026?
Quick answer: Our forecast estimates Wisconsin's pre-rut starts Oct 15 and the rut starts Nov 7, running through Nov 22. Post-rut follows Nov 23–Dec 31.
Our forecast gives Wisconsin the same dates as Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Michigan. All eight states are side by side on the Midwest rut calendar.
A lot of what you'll read online points to Nov. 12–15. Those days land inside our window and a week before the gun opener, so they're a sensible target. Still, rut activity stretches across weeks, and what moves on a given day comes down to weather, wind and temperature. Book a block of days if you can, then let the daily score decide which sits get your top stand.
Wisconsin rut dates 2026 by phase
| Our forecast phase | Our forecast's dates | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Early Season | through Oct 14 | Deer working crop fields, food plots and acorns. Evening sits near food often lead. |
| Pre-Rut | Oct 15–Nov 6 | Scrape lines and rub lines fill in. Bucks expand their range. Cold snaps can pull more deer into daylight. |
| Rut | Nov 7–22 | Bucks moving more, sometimes midday. Doe bedding areas and the trails between them get busy. |
| Post-Rut | Nov 23–Dec 31 | Gun-season traffic, then cold and snow. Deer key on food and cover. Movement tightens to dawn and dusk. |
| Late Season | from Jan 1 | Food is everything. Afternoon sits near the last good food make the most sense. |
These are our forecast's estimated phases for Wisconsin, not hunting season dates. Local timing varies; check your state's regulations for season dates.
Phases are a guide. Cold fronts, wind and temperature move deer activity day to day, which is why the daily score matters more than the calendar.

Wisconsin pre-rut (Oct 15–Nov 6): what to hunt
From Oct 15 to Nov 6 (our estimate), whitetail movement shifts gears. Scrapes start showing up on field corners and along trails, rubs get bigger and fresher, and bucks begin traveling farther from where they spent September.
Late October fronts are worth watching. After a real temperature drop, daylight movement can pick up for a day or two. Our cold-front guide covers the timing.
The Wisconsin rut (Nov 7–22): what to hunt
Inside our estimated Nov 7–22 window, bucks tend to be on their feet more, including some midday travel. The buck you patterned in October may vanish, and a new one may show up.
The last two days of the window, Nov. 21–22, overlap the gun opener weekend, and deer react to the crowds. Weather still matters the whole way: warm, windy days can slow daylight activity even in mid-November.
Wisconsin post-rut and late season: what to hunt
Our post-rut window, Nov 23–Dec 31, takes in most of the nine-day gun season (through Nov. 29), the muzzleloader season (Nov. 30–Dec. 9) and the Dec. 10–13 antlerless-only hunt. After that much hunting traffic, deer key on thick cover and the closest food, and evening sits near food tend to make the most sense.
Late season starts Jan 1 by our estimate. Archery and crossbow run through Jan. 3, or Jan. 31 in Metro subunits and extended-season counties. Snow and cold push deer to food.
How Wisconsin's deer seasons line up with the rut
Wisconsin DNR lists these 2026 deer dates:
- Archery and crossbow: Sept. 12, 2026 – Jan. 3, 2027 (through Jan. 31, 2027, in Metro subunits and counties with extended archery seasons)
- Youth gun deer hunt: Oct. 10–11, 2026
- Nine-day gun: Nov. 21–29, 2026 (opens on the last weekend of our rut window)
- Muzzleloader: Nov. 30 – Dec. 9, 2026
- Statewide antlerless-only hunt: Dec. 10–13, 2026
- Antlerless-only holiday hunt (select Farmland Zone counties): Dec. 24, 2026 – Jan. 1, 2027
DNR notes that dates can change through rulemaking, and units and bag limits vary, so check Wisconsin DNR's current regulations before you hunt.
How to pick your top Wisconsin rut days
There's no magic date, but a few habits help:
- Bowhunters, Nov 7–20 is your window. That's our estimated rut before the gun crowd arrives.
- Pick a stretch, not a day. More days means more chances to catch the right weather.
- Hunt the fronts. A meaningful cold snap beats a date somebody circled online.
- Look at the score each night. Good (65–87) and Excellent (88–100) days with a clean wind deserve your top stand.
- Fair (42–64) days are still worth a sit in November. Poor (0–41) days are fine for scouting, moving a stand or resting a spot.

FAQ
When is the rut in Wisconsin in 2026?
Our forecast estimates the Wisconsin rut starts Nov 7, 2026, and runs through Nov 22. Pre-rut runs Oct 15–Nov 6 and post-rut runs Nov 23–Dec 31.
Is the rut over by the Wisconsin gun opener?
Not quite, by our estimate. Wisconsin DNR lists the 2026 nine-day gun season as Nov. 21–29, and our rut window runs through Nov 22, so the opener lands on its last two days.
Is bow season open during the Wisconsin rut?
Wisconsin DNR lists the 2026 archery and crossbow season as Sept. 12, 2026 – Jan. 3, 2027, which covers our full rut window. Check DNR rules for your unit.
Should I take Nov. 12–15 off?
Those days sit inside our rut window, so they're a solid pick. But weather drives day-to-day movement, so a wider block plus the daily score is the better plan.
