Indiana Deer Season Dates 2026–27
Indiana keeps its calendar simple: a youth weekend in September, archery from October into January, a 16-day firearms season and a December muzzleloader hunt. The dates below come from Indiana DNR’s deer-season page.
When does deer season start in Indiana?
In Indiana, the 2026–27 deer season starts with Archery (crossbow legal) on Oct 1, 2026. Some limited hunts open earlier: Deer Reduction Zones on Sept 15, 2026 and Youth (17 and under) on Sept 26, 2026 (see the notes for who and where). The regular firearms opener is Nov 14, 2026. Open right now
As of Oct 13, 2026, these are open (some only in certain zones or for certain hunters — see the notes):
- Deer Reduction Zones (through Jan 31, 2027)
- Archery (crossbow legal) (through Jan 3, 2027)
Next to open: Firearms on Nov 14, 2026.
What sets Indiana’s calendar apart
Indiana hunters know the November firearms season as the big one, and in 2026 it opens Saturday, Nov 14 and runs 16 days to Nov 29, covering Thanksgiving weekend. Archery stays open on either side of it, from Oct 1 to Jan 3.
- Deer Reduction Zones. In designated urban and suburban zones, deer hunting runs Sept 15, 2026 to Jan 31, 2027 under the zone’s own rules and bag. These zones are small, mapped areas, so confirm a property is inside one before you count on those dates.
- Youth weekend comes early. Hoosiers 17 and under get Sept 26–27, well before the October bow opener.
- No 2026 late antlerless season. Indiana DNR’s page lists none this year, so January hunting outside reduction zones means archery only, until Jan 3.
- Crossbow is part of archery. No separate crossbow dates.
- Muzzleloader after firearms. Dec 5–20, a full two weeks of blackpowder, when Hoosier bowhunters share the woods with smokepoles.
- Public ground. Fish & Wildlife Areas and state forests can post their own rules and draws; read the property page before opening day.
Legal hunting hours in Indiana
Indiana sets deer hours at one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset (Indiana DNR — Hunting and trapping seasons (PDF)). Indiana straddles two time zones — the northwest and southwest corners keep Central time — so read sunrise in your own county’s clock time.
