Deer Movement During Gun Season: What Changes After Opening Day
Where and when do deer move once gun season opens in my state?
Here is where each state’s regular firearms opener lands in 2026, per each state wildlife agency. Some states also hold earlier youth or special gun hunts, so check your state agency:
- Ohio: youth gun Nov. 21–22; deer gun opens Nov. 30
- Indiana: firearms opens Nov. 14
- Michigan: regular firearm opens Nov. 15
- Wisconsin: nine-day gun opens Nov. 21
- Illinois: first firearm season opens Nov. 20
- Iowa: first shotgun season opens Dec. 5
- Pennsylvania: regular firearms opens Nov. 28
- Kentucky: modern gun opens Nov. 14
Once orange is in the woods, deer change fast:
- They head for thick cover no one walks into: cattails, thickets, steep ground, small overlooked patches near roads and houses.
- They use escape routes between hunted woods and that cover.
- Daylight movement often follows people, so hunters walking in and out push deer, including at midday.
Rules vary by county and zone, so check your state wildlife agency’s current regulations before you hunt.

Opening morning can be a shooting gallery or a ghost town. After the first day or two, the deer you are hunting are reacting to people more than to weather.

Hunt around the other hunters
Look at where other hunters park and which woods they walk into. The deer they push will run to cover they think is safe. Set up on the trails between those hunters and the thick stuff, and let other hunters move deer to you.
The midday push
Many hunters climb down mid-morning to warm up, eat or head home. That walk out moves deer. Staying put through the late morning and midday can be your best sit of the day during gun season. Our all-day sit guide covers how to pack for it.
After the first weekend
The woods get quieter on weekdays and later in the season. Deer that survived the opener stay cautious, but they still need to eat. Evening sits near food close to thick cover start to pay off again, especially on cold days.
Bowhunting during gun season
Archery seasons stay open in many states during gun weeks, and orange rules can apply to archers too. Indiana, for example, requires hunter orange for all hunters, archers included, from the start of firearms season until archery ends. Check your state’s rules.
Weather still counts
A cold front on a gun-season weekday can be a great sit. Check the 0–100 deer movement score for your ZIP: Excellent is 88 and up, Good is 65–87, Fair is 42–64 and Poor is 41 and under. Pair a Good or Excellent day with a stand on an escape route.
