Kentucky Rut Dates 2026: When the Rut Starts
Kentucky sits at the late end of our rut calendar. If you've been reading Midwest rut talk since early November, our estimated Kentucky window is still ahead of you.
Here's where our forecast puts the 2026 Kentucky rut, what tends to change in each phase, and how to pick your sits.
When is the rut in Kentucky in 2026?
Quick answer: Our forecast estimates Kentucky's pre-rut starts Oct 29 and the rut starts Nov 21, running through Dec 6. Post-rut follows Dec 7–Jan 14, 2027.
Our forecast puts Kentucky's phases about two weeks behind the core Midwest. The Midwest rut calendar shows Kentucky next to the other seven states.
Many articles name Nov. 12–15 as the days to be out. Those days fall in our pre-rut for Kentucky; our rut window runs later. Mid-November can still be worth hunting. But day-to-day movement rides on weather, wind and temperature, so take a block of days if you can and use the daily score to choose your sits.
Kentucky rut dates 2026 by phase
| Our forecast phase | Our forecast's dates | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Early Season | through Oct 28 | Deer on acorns, crop edges and greens. Evenings near food often lead. Warm spells keep daylight movement short. |
| Pre-Rut | Oct 29–Nov 20 | Rubs and scrapes show up on hardwood edges and field corners. Bucks widen their range. Modern gun season opens late in this phase. |
| Rut | Nov 21–Dec 6 | Bucks on their feet more, sometimes midday. Patterns shift week to week. |
| Post-Rut | Dec 7–Jan 14, 2027 | Bucks back on food. Cold weather and late muzzleloader-season traffic shape movement. |
| Late Season | from Jan 15 | Food and cold run things. Afternoon sits near the last good food usually make the most sense. |
These are our forecast's estimated phases for Kentucky, not hunting season dates. Local timing varies; check your state's regulations for season dates.
Phases are a guide. Cold fronts, wind and temperature move deer activity day to day, which is why the daily score matters more than the calendar.

Kentucky pre-rut (Oct 29–Nov 20): what to hunt
Our estimated pre-rut runs Oct 29 to Nov 20. Expect more fresh sign along hardwood ridges, field edges and creek bottoms, and bucks starting to roam beyond their early-fall core areas.
Acorn crops vary by county and year, so let your scouting guide stand choice. A real cold front can still bring more daylight movement for a day or two after it passes. Our cold-front guide explains the timing.
The Kentucky rut (Nov 21–Dec 6): what to hunt
Within our estimated Nov 21–Dec 6 window, bucks tend to be on their feet more, with midday movement showing up more often than earlier in the fall. A stand that's been quiet can turn on, and your go-to spot can go cold for a few days.
Modern gun season covers the first part of this window, so hunting traffic is part of the picture. Weather matters too, even in late November.
Kentucky post-rut and late season: what to hunt
By our estimate, post-rut runs Dec 7–Jan 14, 2027. The late muzzleloader season (Dec. 12–20) and the free youth weekend (Dec. 26–27) fall in this stretch, and archery and crossbow stay open the whole way. Deer worn down by the rut and gun season spend more time on food.
Late season starts Jan 15 by our estimate, a few days before archery and crossbow close Jan. 18. Cold snaps tend to pull deer to food in daylight.
How Kentucky's deer seasons line up with the rut
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife lists these 2026–27 deer dates:
- Archery: Sept. 5, 2026 – Jan. 18, 2027
- Crossbow: Sept. 19, 2026 – Jan. 18, 2027
- Youth-only firearms: Oct. 10–18, 2026
- Muzzleloader: Oct. 17–18 and Dec. 12–20, 2026
- Modern gun: Nov. 14–29, 2026 (the last week of our pre-rut plus the first nine days of our rut window)
- Free youth weekend: Dec. 26–27, 2026
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife requires hunter orange for all hunters, archers and crossbow hunters included, during modern gun, muzzleloader and youth firearm seasons (outside the WMAs where firearms deer hunting isn't allowed). Zone bag limits differ, so check Kentucky Fish and Wildlife's current regulations before you hunt.
How to pick your top Kentucky rut days
There's no single day to bet on, but a few moves help:
- Bowhunters, look at Nov 30–Dec 6. It's the part of our rut window after modern gun season closes.
- Line up several days. More days, more chances at the right weather.
- Watch the fronts. A real temperature drop counts for more than a circled date.
- Check the score every evening. Good (65–87) or Excellent (88–100) days with a clean wind are when to hunt your top stand.
- Hunt Fair (42–64) days if you can. Use Poor (0–41) days to scout, hang a stand or leave a spot alone.
