Ohio Rut Dates 2026: When the Rut Starts
If you bowhunt Ohio, November is what you've saved vacation days for. Here's where our forecast puts the 2026 Ohio rut, what tends to change in each phase, and how to pick your sits.
When is the rut in Ohio in 2026?
Quick answer: Our forecast estimates Ohio's pre-rut starts Oct 15 and the rut starts Nov 7, running through Nov 22. Post-rut follows Nov 23–Dec 31.
Our forecast gives Ohio the same dates as Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin. See all eight states on the Midwest rut calendar.
Many articles say mid-November, often Nov. 12–15, is the time to be in the stand. That's a reasonable rule of thumb, and those days sit inside our window. But rut activity plays out over weeks, and daily movement depends heavily on weather, wind and temperature. Take a block of days if you can and let the daily score pick which ones to hunt hardest.
Ohio rut dates 2026 by phase
| Our forecast phase | Our forecast's dates | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Early Season | through Oct 14 | Deer on fall food patterns. Evening sits near food often lead. Daylight sightings can feel slow by mid-October. |
| Pre-Rut | Oct 15–Nov 6 | More rubs and scrapes along field edges and travel corridors. Bucks start covering more ground. Cold fronts can lift daylight movement. |
| Rut | Nov 7–22 | Bucks on their feet more, sometimes at midday. Travel between doe bedding and food gets busier. Old patterns stop holding. |
| Post-Rut | Nov 23–Dec 31 | Bucks worn down and back on food. Gun-season traffic and cold weather matter more. Movement often tightens to dawn and dusk. |
| Late Season | from Jan 1 | Food and cold drive almost everything. Afternoon sits near remaining food make the most sense. |
These are our forecast's estimated phases for Ohio, not hunting season dates. Local timing varies; check your state's regulations for season dates.
Phases are a guide. Cold fronts, wind and temperature move deer activity day to day, which is why the daily score matters more than the calendar.

Ohio pre-rut (Oct 15–Nov 6): what to hunt
From Oct 15 to Nov 6 (our estimate), things wake up after the October slowdown. Fresh rubs and scrapes show up more, and bucks start covering more ground. A real cold front can put more deer on their feet in daylight for a day or two.
Hunt fronts more than the calendar. Our cold-front guide covers the timing.
The Ohio rut (Nov 7–22): what to hunt
From Nov 7 to Nov 22 (our estimate), bucks are on their feet more, sometimes at midday. All-day sits make more sense now than they did in October. Patterns break down too: the buck on your camera one week may be gone the next.
Ohio post-rut and late season: what to hunt
By our estimate, post-rut runs Nov 23–Dec 31, and that's where Ohio's gun week (Nov. 30–Dec. 6) and the Dec. 19–20 bonus gun weekend land. Once orange is in the woods, expect deer to bed tighter in thick cover and feed close to it as the weather turns cold.
Our late season starts Jan 1. The Jan. 2–5 muzzleloader season falls there, and bowhunters still have until Feb. 7. Cold snaps and the last good food decide most late sits.
How Ohio's deer seasons line up with the rut
Ohio's archery season opens before our rut window and stays open well after it. Ohio DNR lists these 2026–27 statewide deer dates:
- Archery: Sept. 26, 2026 – Feb. 7, 2027
- Youth deer gun: Nov. 21–22, 2026 (the last weekend of our rut window)
- Deer gun: Nov. 30 – Dec. 6, 2026, plus Dec. 19–20, 2026 (during post-rut)
- Muzzleloader: Jan. 2–5, 2027 (late season)
Archery is open throughout our estimated rut window, before the main gun week opens Nov. 30. Expect more hunters in the woods around the youth gun weekend and gun week. The disease surveillance area runs its own dates (early archery from Sept. 12 and an early gun season Oct. 10–12), and bag limits vary by county, so check Ohio DNR's current regulations before you hunt.
How to pick your top Ohio rut days
No single day is the one, but there are better ways to pick:
- Plan a block, not a date. Several days inside our estimated Nov 7–22 window give you more shots at the right weather.
- Watch for cold fronts. A real temperature drop beats a circled calendar date.
- Check the score the night before. Save your top stand for Good (65–87) or Excellent (88–100) days with a clean wind.
- Don't skip Fair (42–64) days in November if you have the time and the wind works. Use Poor (0–41) days to scout, hang a stand or rest a spot.
- Don't quit after Thanksgiving. Post-rut deer still have to eat, and cold weather can push them to food in daylight.

FAQ
When is the rut in Ohio in 2026?
Our forecast estimates the Ohio rut starts Nov 7, 2026, and runs through Nov 22. Pre-rut runs Oct 15–Nov 6 and post-rut runs Nov 23–Dec 31.
Is bow season open during the Ohio rut?
Yes. Ohio DNR lists the 2026–27 statewide archery season as Sept. 26, 2026 through Feb. 7, 2027, which spans our estimated rut window. Check Ohio DNR's current regulations for your area.
Should I take Nov. 12–15 off?
They sit inside our rut window, so they're a reasonable pick. But weather moves deer day to day, so a wider block plus the daily score is the better plan.

They can. A meaningful temperature drop can lift daylight movement in any phase, including the rut. Check the daily score for your town or ZIP before you commit a day.
