All-Day Sits During the Rut: Which Days Earn One
Is an all-day sit worth it, and which days earn one?
An all-day sit pays off when bucks are cruising between doe groups in daylight. That happens mostly inside the rut, which on our forecast’s estimates runs Nov 7–22 in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin, Nov 17–Dec 2 in Pennsylvania and Nov 21–Dec 6 in Kentucky.
Sit all day when:
- The date is inside your state’s rut window.
- The morning is cold, or a front just went through.
- Your ZIP’s score is Good or Excellent, with the midday window holding up.
- The wind lets you stay in your best stand from dark to dark.
- The stand covers a funnel between doe bedding areas, not a field edge.
Skip it when it is warm and still, the wind swirls, or it is still early October.

Every November story seems to end with “he came through at 11:30.” Sitting dark to dark is hard, so spend those days where they count.

Why midday works in the rut
During the rut, bucks travel from one doe group to the next and that travel doesn’t stop at 9 AM. Hunters who climb down mid-morning walk out right as some of that cruising starts. The app’s midday window (10 AM to 2 PM) gets its own score, so you can see if midday looks worth it before you pack lunch.
Pick the right stand
Funnels, saddles, inside corners and creek crossings between bedding areas beat field edges for long sits. You want a spot bucks pass through while checking for does, not a spot deer use only at first and last light.
How to last dark to dark
- Pack more food and water than you think you need.
- Dress in layers you can add as the day cools.
- Wear your harness the whole time, including breaks.
- Bring a bottle so you never have to climb down.
- Stand up and stretch every so often, quietly.
Can’t do a full day?
Split it into shifts. Hunt the morning, take a break, then hunt the midday window before an evening sit. Check the 0–100 deer movement score for your ZIP the night before: Excellent is 88 and up, Good is 65–87, Fair is 42–64 and Poor is 41 and under.
FAQ
Do deer move at midday during the rut?
Bucks often do, because they travel between doe groups all day. Midday is usually slower outside the rut.
What stand is best for an all-day sit?
A funnel, saddle or creek crossing between doe bedding areas, with a wind that holds all day. Field edges are better for short evening sits.
How do I stay in the stand all day?
Pack plenty of food and water, dress in layers, wear your harness the whole time, and bring a bottle so you never climb down.
