Morning or Evening Hunt? How to Pick the Better Sit

Should I hunt the morning or the evening sit, phase by phase?

The better sit changes as the season goes. Using our forecast’s phase estimates for Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin:

Phase (our estimate)Usually the better sitWhy
Early season (through Oct 14)EveningDeer feed late in the day, and a morning walk past a field full of deer blows them out.
Pre-rut (Oct 15–Nov 6)Both; mornings get betterBucks start moving back to bed later, and cold mornings help.
Rut (Nov 7–22)Morning, then stayBucks cruise after daylight and on into midday.
Post-rut (Nov 23–Dec 31)EveningWorn-down bucks head to food before dark.
Late season (from Jan 1)EveningCold afternoons on the best food.

Pennsylvania and Kentucky run later on our calendar, so slide the table back a bit there.

If you only have one sit before work or one after, the choice matters. The phase sets the starting point; your access and the day’s windows settle it.

Access decides more than the clock

A morning sit on a field edge means walking in past deer that are still feeding in the dark. An evening sit near bedding means walking past bedded deer at midday. Choose the sit you can reach without spooking deer. A great stand with a bad walk in is a bad sit.

Compare the day’s windows

Your free ZIP forecast splits each day into early morning, midday and evening windows, each with its own score. When the morning window scores well above the evening, hunt the morning. On the 0–100 deer movement score, Excellent is 88 and up, Good is 65–87, Fair is 42–64 and Poor is 41 and under.

Temperature swings

The first cold morning after a warm stretch is one of the better morning sits of the year. On warm days, the last light of the evening often holds the only daylight movement.

Getting in for a morning sit

Be in the stand and settled before legal light, not climbing as it starts. Check how your state sets legal shooting hours before you set your alarm.

FAQ

Are deer more active in the morning or evening?

Both are daylight movement windows. Evenings usually lead in early season and late season, while mornings get stronger in the pre-rut and rut.

If I can only hunt once, which should I pick?

Pick the sit you can reach without spooking deer, then compare the morning and evening window scores for your ZIP.

How early should I be in the stand for a morning hunt?

Settled and quiet before legal shooting light. Deer heading to bed around first light are the ones a late climb will spook.
