When to Rattle for Deer, Phase by Phase
When should I rattle or grunt this season?
Rattling works best when bucks are fired up but not yet locked onto does. Here is how we would call each phase, using our forecast’s estimates for Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin (Pennsylvania and Kentucky run later; see below):
| Phase (our estimate) | Rattling | Grunts and bleats |
|---|---|---|
| Early season (through Oct 14) | Leave the antlers home or tickle them lightly. | Soft contact grunts only. |
| Pre-rut (Oct 15–Nov 6) | The best stretch. Sparring turns serious and bucks come to see the fight. | Grunts to stop or turn a buck. |
| Rut (Nov 7–22) | Hit or miss. Bucks with does won’t leave them. | Grunts and doe bleats to pull a cruising buck. |
| Post-rut (Nov 23–Dec 31) | Short and soft, if at all. | Bleats around the second rut. |
Pennsylvania’s pre-rut runs Oct 25–Nov 16 and Kentucky’s Oct 29–Nov 20 on our estimates, so shift the table later there.

Crashing antlers can bring a buck in on a string, or send every deer in the hollow the other way. Timing does most of the work.

How hard to rattle
Start soft. Tickle the tines for a short spell, wait, then build to a louder sequence with grinding, brush thrashing and a few grunts. After a sequence, sit quiet and watch for a good while before you try again. Bucks often slip in without a sound.
Where rattling works
Rattle from a spot with thick cover close by, so a buck feels safe coming in. Expect him to circle downwind to smell the fight before he shows. Pick a stand where the downwind side is open enough to shoot, or have a partner rattle from behind you.
Weather and wind
Calm, cold mornings carry sound a long way and bucks are most willing to come. Strong wind drowns out the antlers and makes deer jumpy. Check the 0–100 deer movement score for your ZIP before you plan a calling morning: Excellent is 88 and up, Good is 65–87, Fair is 42–64 and Poor is 41 and under.
Don’t overcall
Rattling over and over from the same stand teaches local deer something is off. Save it for your best pre-rut mornings and keep the grunt tube for a buck you can see. Once bucks go quiet mid-rut, read why bucks disappear mid-rut before you call harder.
FAQ
What is the best time of year to rattle for deer?
Pre-rut, when sparring turns into real fights and bucks are not yet tending does. On our forecast’s estimates that is Oct 15–Nov 6 for most of the Midwest, Oct 25–Nov 16 in Pennsylvania and Oct 29–Nov 20 in Kentucky.
What time of day is best to rattle?
Calm, cold mornings are hard to beat, but a pre-rut evening near thick cover can work too.
Can rattling scare deer?
Yes. Does and young bucks sometimes leave, and too much calling from one stand makes deer wary. Start soft and call sparingly.
