When Do Bucks Start Running Does?
When do bucks start running does where I hunt?
Bucks start running does in the last days of pre-rut, and it carries into the rut as the first does get close to heat. On our forecast’s estimates, that handoff lands here:
| Where | Pre-rut ends | Rut starts |
|---|---|---|
| Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin | Nov 6 | Nov 7 |
| Pennsylvania | Nov 16 | Nov 17 |
| Kentucky | Nov 20 | Nov 21 |
Expect the first does getting run a little before those dates and the most running in the days after. A given farm can run early or late.

What it looks like when bucks run does
- Does running flat out past your stand and not stopping to look back.
- Young bucks pushing does through open timber in daylight, grunting as they go.
- A buck with his nose on the ground, trotting a doe trail.
- Older bucks cruising the downwind edge of doe bedding instead of joining the circus.
Where to set up
Bucks that are running does stay close to the does, so hunt where does live. Doe bedding areas, the funnels between two bedding areas, creek crossings, inside field corners and brushy fence lines all see traffic. Set on the downwind side of the doe sign, because cruising bucks check it from downwind.
When a doe runs by, stay ready. Let her pass and watch her back trail for a while. The buck behind her may be several minutes back. A grunt can stop him for the shot; save heavy rattling for earlier (see when to rattle).
What speeds it up or slows it down
Frosty mornings and a fresh cold snap put bucks on their feet. A warm, muggy spell pushes much of the running into the dark. Gusty, swirling wind keeps deer edgy and makes your setup harder to hide.
Before you take a day off, check the 0–100 deer movement score for your ZIP. On that score, Excellent is 88 and up, Good is 65–87, Fair is 42–64 and Poor is 41 and under. A Good or Excellent morning during the handoff is the one to burn a vacation day on.
FAQ
Is running does the same as the rut?
It's part of it. Bucks start running does as the first does near heat, late in pre-rut and into the rut. Breeding comes after, when a buck stays with one doe.
Do bucks run does in daylight?
Yes, especially young bucks and especially on cool mornings. Warm weather pushes more of it after dark.
Should I call when bucks are running does?
A grunt can stop or turn a buck that is trailing a doe. Heavy rattling works better a little earlier, in pre-rut, before bucks are with does.
